Wausa junior Esther Nelson had the top time outside of the automatic qualifiers in the 800 with a 2:31.52. The Lady Vikings 4x100 relay team of Ruth Johnson, Paige Nissen, Kaitlyn Kumm and Leah Bloomquist, along with the 4x800 relay squad of Esther Nelson, Darla Nelson, Hannah Hubers and Ann Woockman qualified as an at large team. For Creighton, Thad Hazen qualified in the 100 with a a time of 11.53. Crofton’s Tanner Arens and Connor Arens each qualified in the 1,600 and 3,200, while freshman Jayden Jordan earned a spot in the 400 with a district time of 1:03.01. The state meet begins Friday at Omaha Burke Stadium with Class C and A at 9 a.m. and Class D and B at 3 p.m. Despite going against some stiff competition at Friday’s D-3 District meet at Hartington’s Sports Complex, several Wausa and Bloomfield girls track and field members punched their tickets to the state meet.
In the team standings, the Queen Bees finished as runner-up after accumulating 77 team points. Wynot won the district title with 86 points and Humphrey St. Francis was third with 76 points, followed by the Lady Vikings with 68 points. “I’m really proud of them and they hung together,” stated Bloomfield mentor Duane Wilken. “This is a really tough district, but they really battled through and I’m extremely proud of them. We only had 11 girls competing, so some of those girls competed in multiple races and they really hung in there.” Three Queen Bees captured district titles, and all three qualified for the state meet in multiple events, while Trenton Holz placed second in a very competitive 200 to seal his spot at the state meet. Alexandra Eisenhauer claimed runner-up honors in three events. The Queen Bee qualified for state after second-place finishes in the 100 hurdles, 100 and 300 hurdles. “Having my coaches there to help me and (them) knowing I could make it in all three events,” Eisenhauer commented. “Making it in all three events is tiring, but you have tp push yourself as much as you can while you’re out there. You don’t know if this is your last time or if you will have another chance.” Bree Eisenhauer makes her return to Omaha after winning the district crown in the 3,200 and placing second in the 1,600. “I knew I wouldn’t have much competition in the 3,200, but I still wanted to have a pretty good time,” Eisenhauer noted. “I knew the girl in front of me in the 1,600 was really good, but I wanted to stay close to her and I did that.” Ella McFarland opened the day with first-place finish in the pole vault, then followed it up with a runner-up finish in the 3,200. “Winning the pole vault put me in a better mood,” McFarland said. “It motivated me to go out and qualify in the two mile also.” Not to be out done, three Wausa athletes also kept their seasons alive with top-two finishes at districts. Paige Nissen won both the 100 and 200 meter dash. “It’s been a push all year long and I had to keep working because I knew it was going to be a tough district,” Nissen remarked. The senior Lady Viking cruised to a first-place finish in the 100, and had to fend off Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family’s Taya Beller to capture the 200 title. “I could hear everyone yelling at her and I could hear her footsteps behind me,” Nissen recalled. “I knew I had to keep pushing, I couldn’t let up and I had to keep going. It was a race until the end.” Ruth Johnson will also be making her return to the state meet after placing second in the long jump. “I was really nervous at first because we had some really good competition,” Johnson spoke. “I was kind of freaked out, but I knew if I hit my mark and if I had a good knee drive I’d be able to do fine. I got the qualifying mark right away, so that took off the pressure and I went for PR (personal record).” Freshman Abrielle Nelson punched her ticket to state in her rookie season after capturing the 300 hurdles crown. “It’s pretty exciting because hurdles have always been my favorite,” Nelson stated. “I didn’t come into the season expecting to be as successful as I was. I gave it my all and I got some success. It’s pretty exciting.” Several Wausa and Bloomfield runners and relay teams had solid times, but have to wait on other district times to see if they qualified as an at large for next weekend state meet. Wausa’s Johnson finished fourth in the 200 and sixth in the 100, Esther Nelson took third in the 800, Abrielle Nelson placed fifth in the 100 hurdles, Darla Nelson was sixth in the 800, Ann Woockman claimed sixth in the 3,200, the Lady Vikings’ 4x100 relay team of Johnson, Nissen, Kaitlyn Kumm and Leah Bloomquist claimed runner-up honors, 4x800 really team of Esther Nelson, Darla Nelson, Hannah Hubers and Ann Woockman took fourth, the 4x800 relay team of Devin Rosberg, Cory Schumacher, Carson Barney and Jonah Story placed sixth and the team of Ghatlin Hegge, Tyson Kaiser, Steel Claussen and Ethan Baue finished sixth in the 4x100 relay. Creighton’s Alex Homan won the pole vault after clearing 13-0 to advance to next weekend’s state meet. Homan, along with Battle Creek’s Zach Zohner and Norfolk Catholic’s Evan Smith, each cleared 13-0, but all three athletes failed to clear 13-4. Because Homan had the least amount of misses, the Bulldog vaulter was crown the district champ. “Throughout the season I’ve been making everything first attempt, except my last ones,” Homan stated. “It came down to me competing at the bigger meets and being used to making it on my first attempt.” A trio of Crofton tracksters also kept their track and field seasons alive after winning their respective events. Senior Tyler Janssen held off Ainsworth’s Trey Schlueter and Norfolk Catholic’s Rylan Rasmussen to capture the district crown in the 800. “I planned on going with a 58 (second) quarter to start the race, but the Ainsworth kid went in front of me,” Janssen recalled. “I just rode the race behind him and I was cruising pretty good with a good distance between him, I and third place for most of the race. Rylan Rasmussen did catch up in the end to make it interesting for all of us. I got to the 600 and knew I was going to win the race. I don’t want to sound conceded, but I knew that I had a kick and I knew I was doing exactly what I supposed to be doing. I ran my race and did everything I was supposed to. I’m a senior and it’s my job to understand what I’m supposed to do. I’m blessed to be where I am right now. It was a really great race and I had fun.” Junior Cody Crosley will be joining Janssen at next week’s state meet after winning the long jump with a leap of 20-8.5. “I feel pretty good,” Crosley noted. “I have great coaches. Last year I missed it (going to state) by a little bit. I worked hard and did pretty good. My mark was dead on today. I could have done a little better, but I got the work done.” Freshman Jayden Jordan will make the trip to Omaha in her rookie season after claiming the pole vault title. Jordan successfully cleared 9-0 to secure a spot at the state meet. Several other Warriors will have to await the results of other districts to see if their times were fast enough to qualify as an at large.
