At Thursday’s Northeast Nebraska Track and Field Classic, Conn was honored with the Nebraska Track and Field Classic Achievement Award. “I’m very humble to receive the Northeast Nebraska Track and Field Classic Achievement Award,” Conn said in a statement to the crowd after receiving the award. “There’s a lot of great coaches out there and you’re seeing that today that are well deserving of this award.” The longtime Wausa mentor, and current athletics director, has served as track and field coach for 32 years. Conn admitted that he has grown as a coach as much as his players have. “Early on for me it was about winning and getting first,” Conn commented. “Now it’s about the relationships you have with your athletes. Those are the most important to me. It’s about those relationships not only with the kids, but the other coaches. I’ve had some great coaches to work with over the years.” The award was presented to Conn for his outstanding contributions in the sport of track and field. In front of a packed crowd, Conn received the award and spoke briefly. “Over the past three decades, he’s been a coach that demands, yet shows he cares for his athletes,” stated Wausa senior Paige Nissen. “It’s really awesome and he really cares for us. He pushes us really hard and sometimes that stinks, but it’s really good to have a coach like him.” Conn thanked his assistant coaches, athletes and especially his family. “I want to thank my wife of 34 years and my two sons Andrew and Austin, who supported me,” Conn noted. “I was able to have the opportunity to coach them and that was quite an excitement for me. I’d like to thank all the athletes I’ve coached over the years. You all mean a great deal to me and it’s been a blast watching you, not only as athletes, but become great adults. I’d like to thank all the assistants I’ve had. You’ve all been great, mean a lot to me and I’ve enjoyed coaching with you over the years.” It was fitting on the day Conn received an award for his outstanding excellence in coaching, each of his Lady Viking competitors brought home awards as well. Nissen took third in the 100 and 200, while Esther Nelson was fourth in the 800. “It was a great day,” Conn concluded. “It was a great run by both of them and a phenomenal run by both of them. The way those two kids performed yesterday was awesome." The Niobrara Valley Conference Track Meet and the West Holt Golf Invite will both start late on Saturday, April 26.
The NVC track meet will begin with field events starting at 11:30 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m. The golf meet in Atkinson will have shotgun start at 11 a.m. Pole vault will now begin at 1:30 p.m. With unpleasant weather expected for this weekend, the Mid-State Conference track meet was pushed back.
The conference meet has been moved to Monday at 10 a.m. at the Hartington Sport Complex. |
