Emily May (Lewis) Milacek, daughter of Frank and Vesta (Burger) Lewis, was born July 28, 1926, north of Monowi, Nebraska. She attended Monowi Public School and Lynch High School. After completing high school, Emily obtained her teaching certificate and taught country school east of Monowi and later south of Lynch. On March 6, 1948, Emily married her favorite dancing partner, Joe Milacek. Emily and Joe began their life together farming around the Lynch area. In 1956, they moved to their farm north of Bristow. Emily was Joe’s farming partner, helping him in the field and with chores. She would help sow grain, milk cows, fix fence, and occasionally warm a cold calf on the porch. Emily was a great cook and pie baker. With apples from the tree on the farm, she made many delicious pies for family and friends. Emily was a member of Spencer United Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary Post 78 of Spencer. She enjoyed bowling and was on a league bowling team at Eagle Lanes in Lynch well into her 80’s, often attending the state bowling tournament. Together with her husband, Joe, Emily attended various Czech celebrations, played cards, and went to their children’s and grandchildren’s events. She also was an avid reader and loved to travel. After retiring from the farm, Emily and Joe moved to Spencer. Later they moved to Springfield Assisted Living Center and finally to Alpine Village in Verdigre, Nebraska. Thankful for having shared her life are her children, Shirley of Denver, Colorado, Leslie of San Diego, California, Alice (Lowell) Vanderlei of Springfield, South Dakota, and Phyllis (Al) Carter of Phoenix, Arizona; five grandchildren, Jamie, Jody, Michael, Lisa, and Clarence; three great-grandchildren, Sammi, Josie, and Elowen; sister, Anna Kolar; and brother, Orval. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; daughter, Candice Jo; grandchildren, Joshua and Deborah; her parents; sister, Ruth; and daughter-in-law, Judy. Berta died Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Avera Creighton Hospital in Creighton, Nebraska. Memorial services for Dennis Poppe, age 61, of Thornton, Colorado will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018, at Niobrara Lutheran Church. Pastor Martha Atkins will officiate, with burial in L’Eau Qui Court Cemetery in Niobrara. Dennis died May 6, 2018, at North Saint Anthony Hospital in West Minster, Colorado. Dennis Arland Poppe, son Melvin and Shirley (Berner) Poppe, was born August 11, 1956, at Pierre, South Dakota. He was baptized on December 31, 1957, by Reverend David Rath at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Randolph, Nebraska. His sponsors were Robert and Clarence Berner. Dennis was confirmed on March 26, 1972, by Reverend Walter J. Rossbach at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Dennis attended his first year of school in Blunt, South Dakota and his second year at Sholes, Nebraska, when his family moved back to Nebraska. All the rest of Dennis’s education was at Randolph Public School and he graduated with the Class of 1975. Dennis was also active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Dennis enjoyed many sports, including track, basketball, baseball, softball, swimming, fishing, hunting, blue rock shooting, and playing horseshoes with his Dad and brothers. He also liked going boating and water skiing. Later in life he took up golfing and riding his Harley with his brother and his friends. Dennis enjoyed going elk hunting with his friend, Brian. Dennis was a man of many skills. He was a mechanic, did body shop work, and a carpenter. He was employed with Borst Construction building home in Santee, Nebraska, Durango, Wyoming, and Montana. Dennis was united in marriage to Lori Borst, in May of 1983 and they shared 20 years of marriage. On March 25, 2007, Dennis and Karen Adams were married at Barbados in the Southern Caribbean. They made their home in Thornton, Colorado. In 1988, Dennis started working for Schwans at Randolph, Nebraska. He was later transferred to Perry, Kansas, Sioux City, Iowa, and later Denver, Colorado. Dennis enjoyed working in the yard with Karen, planting a garden, and new flowers. He also liked to decorate their wooden fence with ornaments they would see on a trip or something that just caught his eye. Dennis and Karen enjoyed many cups of coffee on their patio and liked to feed peanuts to their pet squirrels, Spracket, Starskee, and Hutch. He often spent time reminiscing and visiting with his family and friends. He so enjoyed spending that time with them. Dennis will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Dennis is survived by his wife, Karen Poppe of Thorton, Colorado; his mother, Shirley Poppe of Niobrara, Nebraska; sisters, Sharon Wilson of Niobrara and her children, Chelsea, Sara, and Trevor, Shelly (Scott) Smith of Lakewood, Colorado and their children, Luke and Kali, and Janet (Scott) Stratton of Malcolm, Nebraska and their daughter, Emma; and brothers, Lyle Poppe of Lincoln, Nebraska and his son, Dillon, Larry (Wendy) Poppe of Lincoln and their children, Shasta, Mandy, and Joshua, and Joedy (Patti) Poppe of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and their children, Kiah, Keenan, and Maren. He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin; brother, Danny; and infant twin brother, Dale Wade. Billy died Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at his residence. Billy Howard McDonald, son of Tom and Etta (Hickey) McDonald, was born on December 8, 1944, at Boise, Idaho. He attended and graduated from Randolph Public School. He was married to Paula Portugal on January 21, 1998, in Hartington, Nebraska. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army in July, 1962, and was honorably discharged in July, 1965, with SP4 rank. Over two and one-half years were spent in service overseas in Korea and Germany. Bill was a lifetime member of the Randolph V.F.W. Post 5545. Bill has called Fremont, Randolph, and Bloomfield his home over the years. As a Petro-Chemical Start-up Technician, he’s traveled the world opening chemical plants in places including Venezuela, Iraq, Columbia, Burma, Nigeria, Yugoslavia and Mexico, to name a few. He died May 30, 2018, at his home in Bloomfield, Nebraska, at the age of 73. Survivors include his wife, Paula (Portugal) McDonald of Oklahoma; daughter and son-in-law, Kristie (McDonald) and Glenn Moore of Forked River, New Jersey; daughter, Kelly McDonald of Fremont; step-son, William Wyatt; step-daughter, Paula Ann Taylor; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley (McDonald) and Randal Anderson of Hartington; and multitudes of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Tommy McDonald; sisters, Betty Wichman, Neva Lovejoy, and Judy Reeves. |
