Thelma died Wednesday, December 23, 2015, at Avera Creighton Care Centre, following a battle with cancer.
Thelma J. Eggen, the daughter of Ernest and Alma (Clausen) Peters, was born July 25, 1939, at Bloomfield, Nebraska. She was baptized, attended school up to the eighth grade, and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at First Trinity Lutheran Church. Thelma then attended Bloomfield Public School, where she was active in intramural sports, was a cheerleader, played in the band, and worked at the Palace of Sweets until she graduated in 1957.
After high school, Thelma moved to Omaha, Nebraska and worked for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company. On May 16, 1959, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Eggen at First Trinity Lutheran Church. They continued to reside and work in Omaha until 1960. Larry and Thelma moved to San Diego, California, where they worked and lived from 1960 until 1962. In 1962, they moved back to Bloomfield, Nebraska, where Thelma took a job with Copper and Johnson Insurance Company and Larry managed the Standard Service Station for his brother Don. In 1996, Larry became a Standard Oil agent and Thelma helped with the business keeping all the books and records. In addition to handling the books for their business until 1990, she also worked for Creighton Livestock Market, enjoyed working in the garden, and raised two children, Lance Eggen of Page, Nebraska and Jill Phillips of Olathe, Kansas.
Thelma enjoyed volunteering and providing baked goods for many events as a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton. She was a member of Zion Lutheran for 47 years. She was also active in volunteering her time as a knitting instructor for the High Top 4H Club, where both children were involved in many projects. Along with enjoying knitting and crocheting, Thelma enjoyed playing bridge with many ladies groups throughout the years.
Thelma enjoyed the great friends she and Larry made throughout the years, spending time in Creighton and McAllen, Texas, playing board/card games like Michigan Rummy, Aggravation, and Hand and Foot. Times spent with these great friends always started and ended with a smile on her face and many laughs in between.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Larry of Creighton, Nebraska; one son, Lance Eggen of Page, Nebraska; one daughter and her fiancé, Jill Phillips and Brian Edmondson of Olathe, Kansas; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norman and Orville Peters, both of San Diego, California; and two sisters, Janice Eggen of Crofton, Nebraska and Ruth Peters of Lincoln, Nebraska.
