Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Brockhaus-Howser-Fillmer Funeral Home in Norfolk.

Bob died Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Stanton Health Center in Stanton, Nebraska.

Robert James Skalberg was born December 12, 1941, to James and Loretta (Kolessa) Skalberg of Wausa in Bloomfield, NE. He attended country school west of Wausa for about a year and then attended Wausa Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1959. He was an all-star basketball player and earned the nickname “Skelly.” In 1958, Robert was member of the team that played at the state basketball tournament in Lincoln. He played baseball as a youth and also town ball. He loved watching the Nebraska Cornhuskers, as well as all sports.

Robert attended Norfolk Jr. College and was on the basketball team there, after which he returned to Wausa and worked for Larson’s Ford Motors and later for the Erickson brothers’ Ford Garage.

On May 12, 1966, Robert and Betty Kliment were married. They were blessed with four children, Brad, Bryan, Barry, and Rebecca “Becky.”

In October of 1966, Bob and Betty moved to Norfolk where he was employed at Nucor’s Vulcraft plant. He was employed there for 38 years, retiring in January of 2004.

Bob grew up as a member of Thabor Lutheran Church in Wausa where he was confirmed, and in 1970 became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norfolk.

After his retirement, Bob and Betty loved to travel and made many trips to Portland, Oregon and Auburn, Alabama to visit their children and grandchildren. They also made trips with friends to Las Vegas, Alaska, the New England states, Nashville and many others. Later they took their family to Cancun and the Black Hills.

Bob is survived by his children and grandchildren, Brad Skalberg and children Kallie and Issak of Norfolk; Bryan Skalberg and children Nikolas and Livia Skalberg, and Alex and Emily Demaderios, of Portland, Oregon; Barry (Traci) Skalberg and children Samuel, Cara, and Lucas of Grand Island, Nebraska; and Becky (Seth) Snedigar and children Madyson and Connor of Valley, Alabama. Also surviving are his brothers-in-law, Len (Jan) Kliment of Omaha, and Gary (Barb) Kliment of Lincoln; as well as four nieces, along with their husbands and families; and many cousins, friends, and family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (December 2017); his parents; his in-laws, Henry and Martha Kliment; and a nephew, Jeffrey Kliment.

Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
