Funeral services for Donald "Shorty" Jessen, age 96, of Bloomfield, Nebraska will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. Reverend Glen Emery will officiate, with burial in Bloomfield City Cemetery.
Military Honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4996, American Legion Post 249, and Army National Guard Honor Guard.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Brockhaus Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.
Shorty died Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota.
Donald John Jessen, son of John and Frieda (Steineke) Jessen, was born October 28, 1922, at Bloomfield, Nebraska. He was baptized at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Bloomfield and later confirmed in 1943. Donald served in the United States Army during World War II. He was united in marriage to Thelma Bumann on May 29, 1949, at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. They were blessed with two sons, Steven and Daniel.
Donald started farming at a young age and continued until he retired. He was a member of First Trinity Lutheran Church and served in several church offices including, usher, Parochial School Board, and finance committee. Donald enjoyed wood working, reading, being a farmer, and caring for his family.
Donald leaves to mourn his wife, Thelma; sons, Steven (Michelle) and Daniel; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Arlene Barnes, Helen McCoy, Janet (Morris) Gold, and Mary (Tom) Trenhaile.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herb, Lyle, Jack, and Gene; sisters, Marjorie Barnes, Joan Case, and Alyce Sphon; and other relatives and friends.
