Donald Leroy “Butch” Scheinost was born January 1, 1943, at Lynch, Nebraska to Fred and Gladys (Hafsaas) Scheinost. He attended country school for his elementary education and graduated from Spencer High School in 1961. Butch moved to Niobrara in 1963, where he met Mary, who was to be his wife, mother of his two children, and best friend for just over 50 years. They celebrated this milestone on May 8, 2016. Butch and Mary were married May 7, 1966, at St. William’s Catholic Church in Niobrara.
Butch worked road construction, worked for Art Kemp, drove truck, and did survey work at the Devils Nest. He was then employed with Knox County, Rex Diez, Paul Thierolf, and lastly retired from the State of Nebraska Department of Roads as supervisor in 2006.
Butch served in many volunteer positions, including school board, town board, fire department, and was a willing volunteer at many functions at St. William’s Catholic Church. At every mass he attended, he would be greeting visitors with a smile and an opening of the door. He and Mary were members of Rolling Thunder Car Club. At many Kolache Days celebrations in Verdigre, Butch could be found driving a dignitary in the annual parade.
Butch was the best Dad and fan for his children. He attended any and all events in their lives as he was able to. He then carried that attention down to his grandson, Nate, from T-Ball to high school sports and other activities. Every spring Butch looked forward to seeing what his special son-in-law, Brian, would be planting in his garden on the farm and enjoyed the produce from that garden.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Fred; brother, Larry; mother and father-in-law, Cecil and Grace Scott; and his brother-in-law, Richard Scott.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Scheinost of Niobrara, Nebraska; son, Donald Scheinost of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter, Margaret (Brian) Sandoz of Niobrara; grandson, Nate Sandoz of Niobrara; step-grandsons, Colin (Laura) Sandoz and their twin children, Ella and Ethan and Clint Sandoz all of Omaha, Nebraska; brothers-in-law, Jim (Sharon) Scott of Niobrara and Cecil (Pat) Scott of Lynch, Nebraska; sisters-in-law, Georgia (Wilton) Johnson and Esther (Charles) Nielsen all of Niobrara, and Garcia Scheinost of Plainview, Nebraska; special uncle, Bill Scheinost of O’Neill, Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
