The second annual Santee Youth Tribal Picnic was Thursday at the park in Santee. This was held in conjunction with the 8th annual Tribal Youth Camp. The camp had over 100 in attendance, while it was estimated somewhere between 420 and 450 were at the picnic. The picnic was for community members and also tribal employees. There was a potluck with businesses donating drinks and food donated by the tribe.
The Head of Native American Studies Division at NICC, Wyatt Thomas, was the main organizer of the event. Helping him were Tribal Chairman, Roger Trudell, Vice Chair, David Henry, and Tribal Secretary, Stuart Redwing. Others from different community organizations also helped with the event.
The point of the day was to get out and be active. Wyatt Thomas said "One of our traditional values is fading. That value is visitation." Getting together promotes family values and helps battle diabetes.
Events included archery, horseback, egg toss, horseshoes, and a water balloon toss.
