An 18-year-old ran from the Santee Sioux Nation Police custody today near Niobrara.

Around 9:20 this morning, Guillermo Arteaga was pulled over by officials. It was then discovered Arteaga had a outstanding arrest warrant from Dakota County for what was described as a minor offense.

When arrested, Arteaga complained of needing to use the restroom. The officer pulled into a church parking lot near 531 Ave and Highway 12, removed a cuff, and that’s when Arteaga took off.

He fled from the officer into a marshy pasture west of the church near Bazil Creek on the Santee Sioux Nation reservation. The Knox County Sheriff's Department also assisted in the search.

Family members arrived and informed officers that Arteaga is not familiar with the area and has had limited contact with law enforcement prior to the incident.

He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweater, multi-designed grey jogger pants. If you see Arteaga in the community, please contact local law enforcement at (402) 288-4464.

Officials said they believe he not armed and not considered dangerous.
