On Friday March 15th, the Crofton Choir uploaded a video that would change their lives. The choir entered a contest where upon winning the choir would sing alongside the iconic rock band Foreigner.

Crofton’s choir will be performing at Foreigner’s concert Friday March 30 at 8pm at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux City.

Kate Kleinschmit, the Crofton vocal director is beyond proud of her choir kids. According to Kleinschmit the Crofton Choir is going to be part of the song "I wanna know what love is" at the concert. She also says Foreigner does this sort of performance in most of their concerts.

“Although it will only be a few minutes of "fame" for them, it is an experience that these students will take with them for a lifetime.  I'm so excited for them!”

Most of the credit goes to Kleinschmit and her students for winning this competition, but they also know they could not have done it without their small community. Kleinschmit goes on to say, “This "win" for us really doesn't have all that much to do with our music video or singing... it has everything to do with our community.”

Crofton came into this competition as an underdog, not only because of their size but because they also entered the competition late. The whole community quickly learned about this competition and began voting online. Within days, community members and organizations had promoted the video and voted.

Crofton is a community of roughly 800 people. By March 23rd, Crofton had knocked out Sioux City with almost 500 more votes. Sioux City has a population near 80,000. Kleinschmit noted that, “It really speaks well for our small town and the support it has for not just athletics, but everything that our youth is involved in. How fortunate are we to have a whole community behind us?”

Storm Suing recalls “When I got to work the day we found out we won, I walked in and everyone was waiting. They were all clapping and cheering and congratulating me. I was happy and embarrassed all at the same time.”

The choir is very excited to be a part of the Foreigner concert. Some of the students have grown up listening to their music thanks to their parents. However, the choir were already familiar with this genre of music due to the State Champion One Act teams performance featuring many 80’s classic rock songs, including their entry song “I wanna know what love is.”

This will be Thomas Honeywell’s first time attending a concert, and he won’t just be in attendance, he will be performing. “I’m just really excited that I get to sing on stage. I’ve never been to a concert before and this is far from how I imagined it’d be.”

Needless to say, there are a lot of emotions upon finding out they had won. Allie Dahl agreed, “I was really excited when I found out and I was in between speech rounds, so people probably thought I was crazy for being so excited.”

When asked if they were also excited, Julie Jones mentioned how excited she was to be on stage and stated that there were nerves that came along with it. Gavin Potts declared “I’m just excited to sing with Foreigner!”

In preparation for the concert this Friday, the choir have been perfecting the chorus to their song. They are also studying other choir performances on YouTube to mentally prepare for the big night.

Hunter Neuhalfen envisions the concert as a once in a lifetime experience stating “The thing I’m most looking forward to is looking at all of the people in the crowd while getting a view of such an iconic band.”

If anything is certain, this choir is ready to rock.
