While a $5 bill may not receive much scrutiny, a bank employee from Creighton identified a counterfeit version last week.

Following instructions from the Secret Service in Omaha NE, the Midwest Bank in Creighton notified Knox County Sheriff Don Henery that they had in their possession a counterfeit $5 bill on Wed, Dec. 30.

“One of the things the bank told me right away was that the paper did not feel right compared to a real bill,” Sheriff Henery said.

He also stated that the bill in evidence lacked a watermark and had a counterfeit pin number.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is collaborating with the Secret Service on the investigation, but will be handling the case locally at this time.

“I did talk to the Secret Service in Omaha and they have not received any reports as of this date for any counterfeit five dollar bills,” Henery said. “However, we will check the serial number that is on this counterfeit one and it will be entered in a database. If any other ones are passed, we will be able to work with this agency.”

Sheriff Henery gave some advice on how to identify a counterfeit bill.

“The easiest thing is to hold it up to the light and look for the watermark,” Henery said.

Sheriff Henery advises the public to contact their county sheriff’s office if they suspect they have a counterfeit.
