Creighton overwhelmed Wisner-Pilger on Wednesday night, dominating the Gators en route to a 66-12 win in the second round of Class D1 playoffs.
The Bulldogs wasted no time in setting the tone as Cade Hammer took the opening kickoff 70 yards for a score. Bryce and Braden Zimmerer then alternated running the ball in on the next four drives as Creighton breezed out to a 36-0 advantage after the first quarter.
Wisner-Pilger managed to get on the board as Trevor Styskal connected with Colby Heller for a 10-yard pass. But the Bulldogs responded with another score from Bryce Zimmerer and two more from Brayden Zimmerer to make it a 58-6 advantage at the half.
“We’ve got three senior linemen up there, and then Sam Van Metre, a junior, is the tight end. They have had a lot of practice together,” Kliment said. “They’re always really motivated.”
The Bulldogs advance to the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 6, and will travel to Norfolk to take on Lutheran High Northeast. The Eagles were a 66-26 winner over Osceola-High Plains. Despite being the lower seed, No. 5 LHNE will host top-seeded Creighton because the Eagles were on the road in the second round.
“They're a very good offensive team. they’re very disciplined and don’t get a lot of penalties, and they get bodies out in front,” Kliment said. “They’ve got a lot of big bodies and a lot of speed, and their quarterback is a very good player. They’re a legitimate contender. We’ll prepare and hopefully be ready for them.”
Kliment said he's looking forward to the quarterfinals, which has proven to be an achilles heel for the Bulldogs. Creighton bowed out in the third round the last four years. Kliment said his team is using that as motivation, not pressure, and his players are ready for the opportunity to continue marching into playoffs.
“We’ve been talking about it," Kliment said. "I think the last seven years we’re something like 54-2 in the regular season. You have a record like that and have six losses in the last six years in the post-season, the kids are hungry. They really want it.”
