By Logan Lawson logan@pitzerdigital.com Verdigre's 12 and under softball team traveled to Ponca Saturday and Sunday for the Class C District tournament and returned home with the District Runner-up plaque. Verdigre took second in the tournament that included 13 teams from the area. They started off the weekend with an early morning win over Tilden, taking that game 13-7. They then moved on the the next game against Creighton, winning 10-5 in extra innings. Verdigre moved on to face Albion in their final game for Saturday, a game in which Verdigre won in walk-off fashion, 3-2. Entering Sunday with no losses, Verdigre was once again caught in a close game, this time against Battle Creek. Verdigre came out on top, 7-6, to advance to the district championship game versus Albion. Albion took game one, 6-4, after struggling defensively. With both teams recording only one loss and it being a double elimination tournament, the two teams faced off once more for the district championship. Once again, Verdigre was unable to take advantage of a few chances on both offense and defense, losing 7-5. The loss gave Verdigre the runner-up plaque for the first time in the team's history. |
