The Verdigre Booster Club Holiday Tournament wrapped up Wednesday evening, crowning Bloomfield as girls' champions and Niobrara-Verdigre boys' champs.
In the first championship game, the Bloomfield Queen Bees faced the hometown Niobrara-Verdigre Lady Cougars. Earlier this month, the Bees handled the Cougars easily, winning by 44 points. The Cougars came ready to play in this game, however.
After the first quarter, Bloomfield held an 18-10 lead. By halftime, the lead was still 8, with the score of 30-22.
N-V came out of the locker room on fire, and outscored the Bees 16-9, but still trailed by 1 point, 39-38. The fourth quarter had each team scoring 15 points, to have the Bees winning 54-53. Sarah Casteneda clinched the win making a basket with 4.1 seconds remaining.
Emily Knust led scorers for N-V with 21 points, and Ashley Guenther chipped in 11. Danielle Beaudette scored 8, Jace Forker 6, Brittany Eisenhauer 3, and Alisa Hrbek and Shania RedOwl each 2.
The boys game was just as exciting with The N-V Cougars facing the Osmond Tigers. Each team entered the contest with 1 loss.
It was a tight game the whole way with the score knotted at 15 after one quarter. N-V took a 33-32 lead into halftime.
After 3 quarters, the game was tied 45-45. In the fourth quarter, Nate Sandoz sunk two free throws with 10.8 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Cougars. Osmond had a chance to tie with a shot at the buzzer, but came up short, with N-V winning 58-55.
Cade Kalkowski led the Cougars with 19 points. Ricky Bickerstaff had 17, Christian Swalley and Nate Sandoz each had 9, and Cauy Drobny chipped in 4 to round out scoring for N-V.
In the girls consolation game, Allen defeated Osmond 46-39. In the boys' consolation game, Bloomfield beat Allen 52-37.
