Levi of Norfolk, NE was born February 3, 1951, to Lloyd and Meta (Diekmann) Levi in Osmond, Nebraska. He grew up in the Lindy - Bloomfield area where he, along with his sister Rita, competed in Tap Dance Competitions, as well as singing for church events. John graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1969 and afterwards attended Wayne State College. John worked construction and then later for Nucor Steel. John and Kaye (Becker) Levi were married at St. Ludger Catholic Church on April 22, 1978, residing in Norfolk, NE. Three sons were born to them, Brent, Dane, and Chad. Family gatherings revolved around the kids, backyard games, toys, baseball, and small-town Lindy, NE surrounded by cousins and friends. John enjoyed collecting anything Cubs, comparing baseball stats, playing baseball, coaching little league for and with his sons. All of his favorites centered around his family, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, baseball and Pepsi. John is survived by Kaye of Norfolk; son, Brent of Omaha, son, Dane (Yuliana), granddaughter, Diana of Atlanta, son, Chad of Omaha; sister, Rita (Ernie) Eckmann of Lindy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike (Sandy) Becker, Mark (Annette) Becker, Tim (Kathy) Becker; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents. Graveside services for USN Seaman First Class Joseph Maule will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday June 20, 2019, at Bloomfield Cemetery in Bloomfield, Nebraska.

Brockhaus Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Joe died on December 7, 1941, while serving his country at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Joseph Keith Maule was born in Bloomfield, Nebraska on March 20, 1923, to Anton and Ellen Maule (deceased). He had five siblings who are all deceased: Donald (Eva), Vlastimil (Ramona), Antoinette (Willard) Drobney, Bonnie (Foam) Ellis and Elizabeth (Cammy) Cull. Joe enlisted in the Navy in Omaha on January 6, 1941, at age 17, and reported to duty aboard the USS Oklahoma on May 8, 1941. On December 7, 1941, the USS Oklahoma was moored in Berth F-5 in Battleship Row in Pearl Harbor Honolulu, Hawaii when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor began. The first torpedo hit just before 8:00 a.m. followed by multiple torpedoes which caused the USS Oklahoma to quickly capsize resulting in the deaths of its 429 Sailors and Marines. Sf1 Maule was reported “missing” and later classified at “killed in action.” The majority of the 2,408 souls lost that day were buried in mass grave sites in Hawaii. The family was told his remains were “unrecoverable.” Joe’s parents and siblings wished their entire lives that Joe could be brought back to rest in Bloomfield. That wish is finally coming true some 78 years later. Around 2014 the Navy contacted the Maule family and collected DNA from nephew Joseph Keith Maule, niece Jane Mattern, and niece Judy Drobney-Taylor. Joe’s remains were sent to Omaha and finally identified last year. Funeral services for Lawrence Kumm, age 98, of Creighton, Nebraska will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2019, at Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Brockhaus Funeral Home in Creighton. Lawrence died Monday, June 10, 2019, at Norfolk Veterans Home in Norfolk, Nebraska. Lawrence O. Kumm, son of William and Johanna (Lindwurm) Kumm, was born September 1, 1920, at Osmond, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed at Eden Valley Church in rural Pierce County. Lawrence attended country school near his family home where he grew up. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from February 1942 until November 1945. Lawrence served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. When he had returned from the service, Lawrence attended GI school. On March 3, 1946, he was united in marriage to Shirley Gieselman at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield, Nebraska. They were blessed with four children, Gaylen, Cliff, Jolene, and Delray. Lawrence farmed for over 45 years in the Osmond, Hartington, and Creighton areas. He also sold Foxbilt Feeds, Hulting Hybrids Seed Corn, and Archer Oil while farming. In 1989, Lawrence and Shirley retired into Creighton. During his retirement, he kept busy fishing, gardening, making beer and wine, playing cards with neighbors, attending farm sales, woodworking and making unusual gadgets. Lawrence also restored his first new car, a 1951 Studebaker. Lawrence was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he and Shirley were very active. He enjoyed mowing and doing snow removal for his church. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving on the firing squad for funerals for many years. Lawrence was a member of Keep Creighton Beautiful and was instrumental in the restoration of Rose Hill Cemetery, where he spent many hours volunteering. Lawrence is survived by his children, Gaylen Kumm of Boise, Idaho, Cliff (Rowien) Kumm of Beatrice, Jolene Kasper of Crofton, and Delray (Lib) Kumm of O’Neill; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Richard (Norma) Gieselman; and sister-in-law, Fern (Bob) Svehla. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; daughters-in-law, Cathy Kumm and Luane Kumm; son-in-law, Mark Kasper; sisters, Linda (Marvin) Fuelberth and Charlotte (Lyle) Young; brothers, George (Lydia) Kumm and Willard (Betty) Kumm; and in-laws, Lawrence (Virginia) Gieselman and Rachel Mumm Carlow (Aaron Mumm, Vernon Carlow). In 1935, Viola Margaret was born to William and Hilda (Clausen) Bruns on March 9th in Bloomfield, Nebraska. She was welcomed at home by two sisters, Wilma and Shirley. Viola received her education at the St. Andrew’s Catholic school, country school (District 143) and graduated from Bloomfield High School. Viola found half-time work at many local businesses. Those being the Bloomfield Creamery, Teply Hardware store, the Glanzman Bowling Lanes, the local restaurant, Anderson Jewelry store and the High School lunch room. A member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Viola held an office in the Ladies Altar Society and she also sang in the church choir for 20 years. Gaylan Leon Suhr married Viola on November 17, 1953 on a beautiful autumn day. To this union four children were born: Gregory, Kathleen, Gayle Anne and Kurtis. As time progressed, their children were married. Greg and Jenni Suhr, Kathleen and Chris Williams, Gayle and Gary Thibault, and Kurtis and Karen Suhr. Viola has eleven grandchildren: Cianne (Jeff) Hale, Jacob Pettinger, Ariel Judson, Kelly Judson, Philip Huttmann, Brendon (Leigh) Huttmann, Nathan (Cortney) Gieselman, Natalie Whitman, Holly (Sean) Howell, Logan Suhr and Ethan Suhr. Viola was blessed with eleven great grandchildren: Charles Huttmann, Madeline Huttmann, Taylor Huttmann, Jackson Huttmann, Lauren Gieselman, Emily Gieselman, Leo Whitman, Lily Whitman, Levi Whitman, Holden Howell and Finn Howell. In 1979, Viola and Gaylan moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where she was employed by the ASCS Dept of Agriculture as a technician operator of an electronic duplicating machine. Viola worked for 16 years and retired in November, 1996. Viola spent many hours sewing and developing bears, dolls and rabbits. She had a collection of dolls over the years and it became a relaxing time. Viola passed on June 6, 2019 at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska. Viola was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gaylan; parents, Bill and Hilda Bruns; sisters, Wilma Wortmann, Shirley Fink, Mary Barger Huber; brothers-in-law Gary Erickson, Marlyn Barger and Dale Suhr. Jean died surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Brookestone Village in Omaha, Nebraska. Jean Marie Dennell Brockhaus was born November 16, 1945, in Omaha, Nebraska to Alfred R. and Janet (Jamieson) Dennell. She attended Marian High School and graduated in 1963 as Salutatorian. Jean graduated with high honors from Duchesne College in Omaha, earning a bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Biology. On August 26, 1967, she was united in marriage to Gerry J. Brockhaus at Christ the King Catholic Church. They resided in Omaha and she worked at Lutheran Hospital in the pathology department. Five children were born to them, John, Tom, Greg, Ann, and Joe. In 1979, Gerry and Jean purchased Hengstler Funeral Home in Creighton, Nebraska. In 1984, Jean purchased the Flower Basket from Delores Gragert and worked side by side with Gerry until his death in 1997. After Gerry’s death, Jean owned and operated Brockhaus Funeral Homes and Flower Basket until her retirement in 2011. Later that year, she moved to Arizona to be closer to her daughter. Jean moved back to Omaha in 2017. Jean’s best friend and love of her life was her husband, Gerry. They enjoyed traveling together. She was a woman of faith, and her faith carried her through life after Gerry’s death. She enjoyed cooking, holidays, being with her family, and attending Mass. After Gerry’s death, Jean enjoyed traveling with her cousin, Father Pete, to Germany, Argentina, Switzerland, Costa Rica, and many other destinations in the United States. Jean also loved boating and being near the water. Jean was a member of St. Ludger Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She is a past member of American Floral Association. Jean served as a trustee for the Omaha Archdiocesan Educational Foundation, Inc (OAEF), a trustee for the Omaha Archdiocesan Parish Foundation, Inc. (OAPF), and the Archbishop’s Committee for Development Board (ACD). Ruby Jane Davidson, daughter of Herman and Grace Maire, was born February 2, 1927, at Mullen, Nebraska. She attended Mullen Grade School. On December 25, 1947, Ruby married Camden Thomas Davidson in Valentine, Nebraska. They lived and ranched in the Sandhills until purchasing a ranch near Center, Nebraska in 1963. Ruby and Camden were blessed with four children, David, Larry, Terry, and Debbie. She was a rancher and housewife throughout her lifetime. Ruby is survived by her children, David (Jane) Davidson of Center, Nebraska and Debbie Davidson of Ravenna, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Goldie Little of Mullen, Nebraska. Paul “Shad” Larson, son of Anvil and Katherine (Dredge) Larson, was born November 17, 1931, in Osmond, Nebraska. Shad attended Creighton High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean War, serving his country for a total of six years. On November 4, 1959, Shad was united in marriage to Sharon Danaher at Yankton, South Dakota. They were the parents of three children, Perry, Tyon, and Felicia. Shad lived in the Creighton, Verdigre, and Niobrara areas throughout his lifetime. He was a barber in Creighton, municipal chemical salesman, worked in construction, and was a clubhouse manager at Niobrara golf course. Shad was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Lion’s Club. He served as Commander of the VFW and served on the Creighton City Council. Shad was an active member of the community. He was an announcer for local rodeos, parades and football games. He enjoyed umpiring baseball games and kept current in all Husker sports. Shad is survived by his children, Perry, Tyon, and Felicia; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anvil and Katherine (Dredge) Larson; wife, Sharon Danaher; a grandson, Bryce Hekrdle; eleven brothers; and two sisters. Gordie died Friday, May 24, 2019, at Plainview Manor in Plainview, Nebraska. Gordon “Gordie” L. Masat, son of Joe and Ann (Moser) Masat, was born January 25, 1937, at Winnetoon, Nebraska. He graduated from St. Ludger Academy in Creighton, Nebraska and then served his country in the United States Navy. On May 27, 1958, Gordie was united in marriage to Joan Forbes at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Plainview, Nebraska. Four children were born to them: Tom, Mike, Julie, and Kevin. Gordie was a crop duster pilot, farmer, and dairy farmer throughout his lifetime. He was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Brunswick and the American Legion. Gordie was an avid fisherman but he had a great love for the game of baseball. He played, coached, or umpired baseball for over 70 years. Gordie is survived by his children, Tom (Ellie) Masat of Plainview, Nebraska, Mike (Shelly) Masat of Brunswick, Julie (Gary) Hughes of Crofton, Nebraska, and Kevin (Krista) Masat of Brunswick; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Don Masat, Margie Lichty, Ken (Margo) Masat, Jim Masat, and Dick (Judy) Masat. Clarence died Monday, May 20, 2019, at Plainview Manor in Plainview, Nebraska. Clarence Carl Suhr, the thirteenth child of Nick and Dora Suhr, was born October 17, 1917, at Osmond, Nebraska. He had a twin sister, Clara. Clarence’s early childhood was spent in Osmond where he attended the Lutheran parochial school. His family moved to Bloomfield where he finished grade school and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. During his high school years at Wausa, Clarence lived with his sister Wilma and her husband Dave Hult. He earned his keep by assisting with the family dairy. Here Clarence met his future wife, Helen Swanson, the hired girl. They were married December 25, 1939, at Thabor Lutheran Church in Wausa, where Clarence became a faithful lifetime member. Their first home was in Omaha. Clarence worked at The Old English Inn, and Helen served as a maid for wealthy families. After a couple of years, they returned to the Wausa area and started a life of farming. After losing his wife in 1989, Clarence continued to live on the farm until the age of 97, when he moved to Countryside Villa in Wausa. Clarence is survived by four daughters, JoAnn (Dwain) Kumm of Wausa, Karen (Rolan) Anderson of Lakeville, Minnesota, Elaine (Charles) Robins of Wisner, Nebraska, and Janet (Gene) Arnold of Manteca, California; grandchildren, Steve (Cynthia) Kumm, Kathryn (Kenny) Schechinger, Dan Kumm, Mike (LaNell) Kumm, Nathan Kumm, Tracy (Mark) Richter, Sarah (Russ) Simon, Christopher Anderson, Teresa (Kevin) Koenig, Christine Ross, Andrew (Courtney) Newquist, and Alyssa Arnold; 23 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Gladys Johnson and Leona Wischof. Carol Elizabeth (Neumann) Schmidt, daughter of Floyd LaVerne and Florence Elizabeth (Jewell) Neumann, was born April 13, 1921, at the family farm west of Winnetoon, Nebraska. Carol attended school at Rural District 156 and graduated from Winnetoon High School in 1939. She worked at a Bomber Plant in Omaha which is now SAC Air Force Museum. Carol then attended college in Wayne. She taught country school near Verdel and west of Creighton. On August 10, 1948, Carol married Arnold W. Schmidt at the Methodist Church in Creighton, Nebraska. They were the parents of Lynn Warren Schmidt. Carol and Arnold lived on farms west of Winnetoon, south of Winnetoon, and north of Royal, Nebraska. Carol later resided at Avera Creighton Care Centre. She was a member of Faith United Church in Creighton, Millerboro Ladies Aid, and the Neighborhood Club. Beginning in the 1950’s Carol and Arnold hosted the annual 4th of July picnic for friends and family. The created a picnic site “down in their pasture” along the Verdigre Creek. As children grew up, people moved, and numbers dwindled, the picnic was moved to their air-conditioned home. Carol continued this 4th of July tradition through 2013. She loved all kinds of animals. They had the usual farm animals and also peacocks, an emu and llama, and ostriches. She and Arnold enjoyed volunteering at the Royal Zoo. Carol is survived by her son, Lynn Schmidt; former daughter-in-law, Crystal Schmidt; two grandchildren, Brandon and Jennifer; six great-grandchildren; brother, Dale (Joann) Neumann of Prescott Valley, Arizona; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister and brother and their spouses. |
