Julian died Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at Good Samaritan Society in Bloomfield.

Julian Claude Canaday was born October 7, 1930, on the family ranch north of Bloomfield, where he lived all his life. His parents, Claude and Grace Canaday, were both graduates of the University of Nebraska and instilled in him the value of a good education.
Julian graduated from Bloomfield High School. He attended Nebraska Wesleyan for two years and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1952, with a degree in agriculture. He served two years in the United States Army, returning to the family ranch and teaching Vet Ag for two years.
Julian married Kathleen Sampson in 1954, in Chickasha, Oklahoma. They lived on the Canaday Ranch for 62 years.
Julian was a longtime member of Christ Memorial United Methodist Church. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, chairman of the church board, and other offices.
Julian’s lifelong interest was his cattle business and selecting cattle for carcass traits as well as improving genetics in his herd. He and Kathleen sponsored over a 25-year period, scholarships for Bloomfield and Crofton students to attend the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture.
Julian was president of the Bloomfield School Board and member for ten years and Master of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Nebraska Ag Builders, Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement, was past president of Nebraska Experimental Farm Association at Concord, and also a past board member and sponsor of the Ag in the Classroom Program. Julian served on the Lewis and Clark NRD Board and received the picture award, was a member of Knox County Farm Bureau, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association and R. Calf, and was past president and board member of Nebraska L.E.A.D. Council.

Julian was the recipient of the 1998 Knox County Cattleman of the Year Award. He and his family were recipients of the Lincoln Journal Star “Honor Farm Family” Award, and also recipients of the UNL Block and Bridle Hall of Fame Annual Picture Award.
In 2011, Julian was honored by the Nebraska L.E.A.D. Alumni Association to receive the Allen Blezek “Friend of L.E.A.D. Award” at the L.E.A.D. Recognition Banquet. In his acceptance speech he quoted the advice his father Claude gave to him when he told him to simply, “Be yourself and try to do what is right.”

Julian was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother, Elwin, and his son Paul Canaday.
