Lawrence died Monday, June 10, 2019, at Norfolk Veterans Home in Norfolk, Nebraska.

Lawrence O. Kumm, son of William and Johanna (Lindwurm) Kumm, was born September 1, 1920, at Osmond, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed at Eden Valley Church in rural Pierce County. Lawrence attended country school near his family home where he grew up. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from February 1942 until November 1945. Lawrence served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. When he had returned from the service, Lawrence attended GI school. On March 3, 1946, he was united in marriage to Shirley Gieselman at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield, Nebraska. They were blessed with four children, Gaylen, Cliff, Jolene, and Delray.

Lawrence farmed for over 45 years in the Osmond, Hartington, and Creighton areas. He also sold Foxbilt Feeds, Hulting Hybrids Seed Corn, and Archer Oil while farming. In 1989, Lawrence and Shirley retired into Creighton. During his retirement, he kept busy fishing, gardening, making beer and wine, playing cards with neighbors, attending farm sales, woodworking and making unusual gadgets. Lawrence also restored his first new car, a 1951 Studebaker.

Lawrence was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he and Shirley were very active. He enjoyed mowing and doing snow removal for his church. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving on the firing squad for funerals for many years. Lawrence was a member of Keep Creighton Beautiful and was instrumental in the restoration of Rose Hill Cemetery, where he spent many hours volunteering.

Lawrence is survived by his children, Gaylen Kumm of Boise, Idaho, Cliff (Rowien) Kumm of Beatrice, Jolene Kasper of Crofton, and Delray (Lib) Kumm of O’Neill; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Richard (Norma) Gieselman; and sister-in-law, Fern (Bob) Svehla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; daughters-in-law, Cathy Kumm and Luane Kumm; son-in-law, Mark Kasper; sisters, Linda (Marvin) Fuelberth and Charlotte (Lyle) Young; brothers, George (Lydia) Kumm and Willard (Betty) Kumm; and in-laws, Lawrence (Virginia) Gieselman and Rachel Mumm Carlow (Aaron Mumm, Vernon Carlow).

Memorials may be directed to Alpine Village, Rose Hill Cemetery, or VFW Post 1151.
