Funeral services for John Chapman, age 72, of Santee, Nebraska will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2018, at Oyate Oyanke Community Center in Santee. Reverend Patricia Whitehorse-Carda will officiate, with burial in Blessed Redeemer Cemetery in rural, Niobrara, Nebraska.
Military Honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4834 and American Legion Post 224.
Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. Friday at Oyate Oyanke Community Center, and continue until service time on Monday, with 7:00 p.m. Wake Services each evening.
Brockhaus Funeral Home in Niobrara is in charge of arrangements.
John died Tuesday, November 13, 2018, at his residence.
John Curtis Chapman, son of Herman F. Chapman and Grace P. Williams, was born December 17, 1945, at Winnebago, Nebraska. He attended school in Center, Nebraska and was a member of the Center Panthers basketball team that won the State Championship. He graduated from Niobrara High School and also earned an Associate Degree of Applied Science from Nebraska Indian Community College in Santee. He entered the United States Air Force in Omaha, Nebraska on March 30, 1965, and served his country until he was honorably discharged on January 27, 1967, at Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is considered a Vietnam Veteran.
John worked at various places throughout his lifetime. He worked for the Santee Sioux Tribe in construction and as a carpenter. He also worked for Gateway of Norfolk, Inc in Yankton, South Dakota as a laborer doing construction work. John later was employed at Western Plains Construction in Lincoln, Nebraska for one year. He retired after his most recent employment with the Santee Tribe in 1998.
John is survived by his brother, Don Chapman of Zuni, New Mexico; and his sister, Liz Hamilton of Niobrara, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman F. and Grace P. Chapman; and his siblings, Delores Chapman Cutls, Kenneth Chapman, Elmer Chapman, Gloria Chapman Brown, Herman Chapman, Jr., Douglas Chapman, Patricia Chapman, Carol Chapman, and Connie Chapman.
