On March 10, 2018, Vicki Herzog passed away at her home in Elkhorn, Nebraska, two months after having been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She resided near Bloomfield for most of her adult life, but maintained dual residences in Elkhorn and Bloomfield for the past five years.
Vicki Lee Evans was born on August 18, 1947, in Lincoln, NE to Marvin and Lora (Dickerson) Evans. She graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1965 and from the University of Nebraska in 1968 with a degree in Elementary Education. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. While in college at UNL, she met her future husband, Jim Herzog, and they married on July 13, 1969. They lived at Fort Knox, Kentucky and Fort Riley, Kansas while Jim was in the Army. Their oldest daughter, Amy, was born during this time.
In 1971, Jim and Vicki returned to the Bloomfield area and engaged in the farming and cattle feeding business with Ed and Zi Herzog on the family farm northeast of Bloomfield, where Jim had grown up. They had two more daughters, Jennifer and Claire. Over the years, they significantly expanded H&H Cattle Co. She was an integral part of the family business, including working in the office, managing employee housing, and cooking excellent meals daily for several men. In 2017, Jim and Vicki sold the feedlot operation and moved full-time to Elkhorn.
Vicki was interested and active in local organizations. She was a member of Christ Memorial United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, led the children’s choir, and developed their bell choir. She was also active in Today for Tomorrow (Young Women in Action), organized the local Style Show for several years, and helped fundraise to purchase new equipment for the school playground and city park. She also served on the Bloomfield Community Schools Board of Education. She was a generous person, often anonymously assisting those in need. In later years, Vicki became interested in helping and mentoring refugee families in the Omaha area. She enjoyed finding opportunities to use her teaching skills, gardening, collecting elephants, singing and playing piano, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include husband, Jim; daughters, Amy Mielak (John) of Lincoln, Jen Herzog (Craig Brown) of Omaha, and Claire Herzog (Seth Chisi) of Omaha; brother, Monte Evans (Jane) of Papillion; grandchildren, Evan, Grant, and Elise Mielak, Ava and Miles Brown, Caleb Chisi; and special family friends, Luka Thor, Nyadeny Chuol and their family.
