Funeral services for Pastor Casey Nelson, age 60, of Winnetoon, Nebraska will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Faith Hope and Love Fellowship Church in Creighton, Nebraska. Pastor Cary Nelson will officiate.

Burial will be Thursday at Gordon Cemetery in Gordon, Nebraska.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church, with a 7:00 p.m. Celebration of Life Service.

Brockhaus Funeral Home in Creighton is in charge of arrangements.

Pastor Casey died Saturday, October 28, 2016, at Niobrara Valley Hospital in Lynch, Nebraska.

Casey Decklyn Nelson was born March 4, 1956, to Decklyn and Louese Nelson, at Burwell, Nebraska.  When he was 18 months old, the family moved to the Merriman, Nebraska area.  Later, the family lived in the Burwell area again.  At age 8, he was injured in a farm accident and spent a year in a body cast, to regain the use of his leg.

Later, the family moved to the Gordon area.  Casey attended rural schools through the eighth grade. He grew up learning to love God, and ride and break horses. Casey graduated from high school at Gordon, Nebraska in 1974.

He married his high school sweetheart, Janice Johnson, on May 25, 1975. He attended Chadron State College. He served as interim pastor of Gordon Baptist Church for a short time. Then he attended Pillsbury Baptist Bible College in Owatonna, Minnesota. The couple was blessed with three children, Walter, Delacia, and Kathryn.

Family and close friends started the church Country Hills Fellowship, in Clinton, Nebraska. In 1982, Casey came home to pastor the congregation, started a Bible study in Martin, South Dakota, while he worked on ranches to support his family. When Casey was 29, he had a severe heart attack followed by double bypass surgery. In 1989, he sold the small herd of cattle he had established and became full-time pastor of Faith, Hope, and Love Fellowship in Creighton, Nebraska.

Pastor Casey had continued to faithfully serve this church and community for almost 28 years. He helped reestablish the Creighton Ministerial Association. Over the years the Nelson’s have hosted camp meetings, hosted missionaries, gone on mission trips to Belize, Central America, and Mexico, reached out to the children of the community with VBS and Hallelujah night, and set up baccalaureate services. In the last few years, God has given him a chance to enjoy his love of ranching again by building up a small herd of cattle. Pastor Casey has always had a unique ability to understand what a person needed and step in to provide it.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter and Gladys Nelson and William and Freda Flock; and his father Decklyn Nelson.

He is survived by his mother, Louese Nelson of Trinidad, Colorado; brother, Pastor Cary (Michelle) Nelson of Trinidad, Colorado; his wife, Janice Nelson, of Winnetoon; son, Walter (Keri) Nelson of Crawford, Nebraska; daughters, Delacia (Mark) Hartman of Fremont, Nebraska and Kathryn (Brian) Kaufman of Springview, Nebraska; and eight grandchildren, Megan and Trevor Nelson, Alexa, Alisha, and Makenna Hartman, and Stetson, Beau, and Bailey Kaufman.
