Funeral Services For James "Sarge" Smith

Memorial services for James O. “Sarge” Smith, age 85, of Creighton, Nebraska will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 6, 2017, at Brockhaus Funeral Home in Creighton. Reverend Martha Atkins will officiate, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery in Creighton.
Military Honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1151, American Legion Post 74,  Army National Guard Honor Guard, and American Legion Riders.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
James died Sunday, October 1, 2017, at his residence.
James “Sarge” Oliver Smith, son of Fred and Carrie (Thompson) Smith, was born October 6, 1931, at Madison, Nebraska. Sarge attended schools in Norfolk, Creighton, and Winnetoon. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country from April 15, 1949, until May 15, 1953. Sarge then served in the United States Army from March 21, 1954, until May 31, 1972. He served in Korea and Vietnam, and retired as Sergeant First Class.
In 1959, Sarge married Paulette Briand in Le Pellerin, France. They were blessed with 58 years of marriage and one daughter, Roberta. After Sarge retired from the service in 1972, they lived in Creighton where he worked for Creighton Auto and Creighton Police Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1151 in Creighton and Police Officers Association of Nebraska.
Sarge is survived by his beloved spouse, Paulette of Creighton, Nebraska; daughter, Robbie (David) Trudeau of Battle Creek, Nebraska; two granddaughters, Dana (Brian) Nuzum of Omaha, Nebraska and Corinne Saner of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two great-grandchildren, Ashton and Taylin; sister, Norma Jean Dunklau of Lincoln, Nebraska; three sisters-in-law, Andree Haugmard, Simone Buffat, and Annette Olivier all of France; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Carrie; one daughter, Jane; and two brothers, Bobby and Jerry.
