Funeral services for Elwin C. Olson, age 82, of Bloomfield, Nebraska will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at Evangelical Covenant Church in Wausa, Nebraska. Pastor Matt Norlen will officiate, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wausa.

Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church.

Brockhaus Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.

Elwin entered his heavenly home Thursday morning, February 9, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society in Bloomfield.

Elwin Clarence Olson was born on March 8, 1934, the second child of Clarence and Lula (Suhr) Olson.  Elwin was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Wausa, Nebraska and professed Jesus Christ as his Savior and strived to live as a fisher of men.  He started his schooling in country school and graduated from Wausa High School in 1951.  He was offered a football scholarship to Norfolk Junior College but the family farm kept him home.  In 1955, Elwin volunteered for the U.S. Army but was deferred because of a medical condition involving his hip. He told the story of crawling on his hands and knees working road construction to buy an engagement ring. He traveled to California and built hay barns until his bride said yes! He was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Joslin on March 30, 1958. They were blessed with the birth of four children: Kevin, Kathryn, David, and Rebecca.

Elwin spent his life farming, working as a livestock order buyer, and other various jobs including making deliveries for Olson Seed & Feed. He was proud of his part in feeding the world.  As an order buyer he bought livestock that was shipped to most every state and several other countries. He always dropped what he was doing for someone in need. He was willing to serve. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Covenant Cedars Bible Camp board member, and was active with the livestock feeders association. He enjoyed sharing memories of Covenant Cedars and his part of helping build the Wausa cabin as a young man. Elwin and Shirley made their home on the farm until moving into Bloomfield in the 90’s.  In 2009, Elwin moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Bloomfield where he spent his remaining years.

Elwin cherished time spent with his family. Hunting, fishing, playing checkers, or card games were all teachable moments in his eyes.  He enjoyed football, bowling, and watching stock car races. He particularly enjoyed keeping the box score for baseball games, especially for the Minnesota Twins.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of almost 59 years; sons, Kevin of Stanton, Nebraska and David (Kathy) of Bloomfield; daughters, Kathryn (Randy) Mundorf of Spearfish, South Dakota and Rebecca (Tony) Vogel of Howells, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, LaVerle Bish of Aurora, Nebraska and Marjorie Brummer of Norfolk, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Deanna True; daughter-in-law, Sharon Olson; and several grand and great-grand angel babies.
