Funeral Services For Dora Mary Belgum

Dora Mary Belgum, 90 of Albion, NE, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2017 at the Boone County Health Center in Albion, NE. 

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2017 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Albion, NE with Rev. David Frerichs officiating.  Burial will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion, NE.  Visitation will be Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion, NE.


Dora Mary Belgum, the daughter of William Wilks and Ruth (Fusselman) Wilks Wieser was born on September 17, 1926 at Genoa, NE. She was baptized at the United Church of Christ-Congregational in Albion, NE and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion, NE.  Mary attended elementary school at Boone County District 49 and Albion Public School.  She graduated from Albion High School with the class of 1945.

Mary was united in marriage to Gordon Belgum on April 24, 1946 at Immanuel Lutheran Church (South Branch) rural Albion, NE.  The couple lived and raised their family in Albion where Mary worked as a nurse’s aide at the Albion Hospital.  Mary entered the first Licensed Practical Nursing Program at Northeast Community College in Norfolk and graduated in 1969.  Mary found employment as a Charge Nurse at the Wolf Memorial Home. From there, Mary returned to the Albion Hospital as a Staff Nurse. Her time there was followed by a 5-year stint with Dr. Roy Smith at the Albion Medical Clinic. When Dr. Smith passed away, Mary returned to the Albion Hospital for a short time. When the Great Plains Medical Clinic opened, Mary accepted a position there to work with Dr. Gary Smith and Dr. Milton Zadina. After the clinic closed, Mary performed in-home nursing services until she retired.

Mary was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Albion and the WELCA there.  She volunteered and managed the Boone County Area Food Pantry for a number of years.  She was also a member and Past President of Division 6, Licensed Practical Nurses Association of Nebraska.  Mary was elected by her peers as a delegate to the national convention on several occasions.  Mary enjoyed gardening, collecting unique items, reading, volunteering, spending time with friends and family. She especially enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Besides her family, Mary’s life passion was nursing. She truly enjoyed caring for others. She worked in the nursing field her entire career.

Mary is survived by her three children: Jim (Donna) Belgum of Nickerson, NE; Bill (Carla) Belgum of Lincoln, NE; and Mary Belgum of Phoenix, AZ;  nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; four sisters: Roberta (Myron) Repenning of Bloomfield, NE; Darlene (Gordon) Haave of Albion, NE; Barbara Stillenger of Minneapolis, MN; Judith (Donald) Ferguson of Las Vegas, NV; two brothers: Ray (Betty) Pike of Missouri Valley, IA; Bill (Eileen) Wieser of Albion, NE; brother-in-law LeRoy (Dorothy) Belgum of Fullerton, NE; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents Ruth Wieser and William Wilks and step-father Halver Wieser, husband Gordon, son Robert Belgum, infant brother Daniel Fusselman, brothers-in-law: Carl Noffke, Jess Wallick, Melvin Strong, and Burt Belgum; sisters-in-law: Arlene Wallick, Carol Strong, and Dorothy Belgum.
