Clarence’s early childhood was spent in Osmond where he attended the Lutheran parochial school. His family moved to Bloomfield where he finished grade school and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. During his high school years at Wausa, Clarence lived with his sister Wilma and her husband Dave Hult. He earned his keep by assisting with the family dairy.
Here Clarence met his future wife, Helen Swanson, the hired girl. They were married December 25, 1939, at Thabor Lutheran Church in Wausa, where Clarence became a faithful lifetime member. Their first home was in Omaha. Clarence worked at The Old English Inn, and Helen served as a maid for wealthy families. After a couple of years, they returned to the Wausa area and started a life of farming.
