Carol Elizabeth (Neumann) Schmidt, daughter of Floyd LaVerne and Florence Elizabeth (Jewell) Neumann, was born April 13, 1921, at the family farm west of Winnetoon, Nebraska. Carol attended school at Rural District 156 and graduated from Winnetoon High School in 1939. She worked at a Bomber Plant in Omaha which is now SAC Air Force Museum. Carol then attended college in Wayne. She taught country school near Verdel and west of Creighton. On August 10, 1948, Carol married Arnold W. Schmidt at the Methodist Church in Creighton, Nebraska. They were the parents of Lynn Warren Schmidt.
Carol and Arnold lived on farms west of Winnetoon, south of Winnetoon, and north of Royal, Nebraska. Carol later resided at Avera Creighton Care Centre. She was a member of Faith United Church in Creighton, Millerboro Ladies Aid, and the Neighborhood Club.
Beginning in the 1950’s Carol and Arnold hosted the annual 4th of July picnic for friends and family. The created a picnic site “down in their pasture” along the Verdigre Creek. As children grew up, people moved, and numbers dwindled, the picnic was moved to their air-conditioned home. Carol continued this 4th of July tradition through 2013. She loved all kinds of animals. They had the usual farm animals and also peacocks, an emu and llama, and ostriches. She and Arnold enjoyed volunteering at the Royal Zoo.
Carol is survived by her son, Lynn Schmidt; former daughter-in-law, Crystal Schmidt; two grandchildren, Brandon and Jennifer; six great-grandchildren; brother, Dale (Joann) Neumann of Prescott Valley, Arizona; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister and brother and their spouses.
